Palo Verde Principal Biography

Joanne Kramer

Joanne Kramer, Principal

I was born in Boston and at the age of three months moved to Germany. My father was a Foreign Service Officer and his job gave us the opportunity to live in Spain and Uruguay when I was growing up. I attended American University in Washington, D.C. and graduated from the University of Maryland with a BA in Latin American Area Studies. I moved to Tucson to pursue a Master's in Spanish Literature at the University of Arizona.

I began my career as an educator in Chinle, Arizona, teaching high school reading. In the evenings I taught Vietnam veterans how to read. I taught middle school reading in Tucson in the Sunnyside School District and then moved to Casa Grande, where I have been for the last 33 years. While in the Casa Grande Elementary School District, I taught 4th grade, served as the ELL Coordinator, Title I teacher, and was the District Reading First Coordinator. After many years of teaching, I received my Educational Leadership certification from Northern Arizona University. I was the principal at McCartney Ranch Elementary School for the last 7 years. During that time our school became an A+ School of Excellence.

I have been a member of the Casa Grande Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, Kappa Kappa Gamma, teachers sorority, board member of the Boys and Girls Club, a member of the Cesar Chavez Memorial Committee, and was appointed by Governor Janet Napolitano to a 4-year term on the State Board of Education. It was an honor to serve our state by helping to shape policy and promote excellence in the education of all students in Arizona.

My husband Donovan and I have three wonderful children who all attended the University of Arizona. We are “Wildcats for Life” and have been to every home football game for the last 13 years. My favorite things to do are travel and discover new beaches that I have not visited before and spend time with my grandson, Maxito.

Because of my travels, I am a fluent Spanish-speaker and am able to use my skills every day on our campus. I am very fortunate to be the principal at Palo Verde and I look forward to working collaboratively to build a culture of success and strengthen the academic achievement of our students and the relationship between the school, home, and our community.
